Doctors Blake Riggs and Teaster Baird reached milestones in their professorial careers. Effective fall 2016 Blake Riggs, PhD, will be promoted to Associate Professor of Biology with tenure, and Teaster Baird, PhD, will be promoted to full Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry. Dr. Riggs joined the San Francisco State University faculty in 2010 and Dr. Baird joined in 2002. Both are recipients of the prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER award that recognizes excellence in teaching and research. Dr. Riggs is the SF BUILD Liaison to the National Research Mentoring Network and leads a near-peer mentoring project. Dr. Baird is Co-Leader of the SF BUILD Student Training Core.

Rebekah Hare is a Laboratory Research and Teaching Technician (LRTT) with BLaST. She completed her PhD in Biology at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks (UAF) in 2014, focused on Francisella pathogenicity. Rebekah is also adjunct faculty at Iḷisaġvik College in Barrow, AK and Co-I on the BLaST Pilot Project: Arctic Microbes. She lives her personal motto work hard, play hard in the lab and classroom, as well as, in roller derby bouts and long trail rides on her horse.
Every year, Rebekah mentors 10 or more students including those from UAF and Iḷisaġvik. She directs independent study courses for several students receiving credit for the class, as well as fosters their lab experience and guides them on their chosen career path.

The Chronicle of Higher Education reports "Minority-serving institutions, often laboring under tight budgets, educate students who face many challenges. More than half of the students enrolled in these institutions receive Pell Grants, nearly half are the first in their family to attend college and many struggle with inadequate academic preparation. Yet these colleges have had a significant impact."

The Chronicle of Higher Education reports colleges across the country are developing programs where groups underrepresented in Ph.D. programs and in faculty ranks can have a sense of community and thrive.
"If the nations colleges are going to succeed at diversifying the professoriate, work has to be done here, at this crucial point in the pipeline. Its a concern commonly cited by students and others demanding that their campuses improve their climate on race: Even as the student body grows more diverse, the faculty has remained stubbornly white. Only about 12 percent of full-time faculty members are black, Hispanic, or Native American."

Daily News-Miner reports "33 rising high school freshmen and sophomores from the North Slope and Northwest Arctic who flew to Fairbanks this summer. They took a six-day geologic field trip along the Parks Highway and surrounding areas as part of the GeoFORCE Alaska program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks."

The National Research Mentoring Network's grant-writing coaching groups are more than just 1-2 day workshops. Each model is an intensive program for junior investigators to work closely with experienced faculty members and peers on the grantsmanship of an National Institutes of Health grant proposal.
There are two NRMN research grant-writing coaching groups, each with two distinct cohorts accepting applications for Fall 2016 including a new cohort for NRMN's Proposal Preparation Program meeting at the University of California, Davis.

NRMN has just formally launched its Mentor Certification program. Mentors from around the country can now apply on the NRMNet.net website to be recognized via certificate as an NRMN Mentor, NRMN Certified Mentor, or NRMN Master Mentor, depending on their level of experience and demonstrated expertise as a mentor.

Starting in late July 2016, the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) will be releasing a series of videos on health disparities research entitled NRMN Health Research Talks. The 8-video series will provide professional development information for junior faculty planning research careers as independent investigators in fields related to community-based health and health disparities. NRMN announces the complete list of topics and speakers for the series.

The National Research Mentoring Network Committee on Institutional Cooperation Academic Network (NRMN-CAN) hosted a Mentor Training Workshop for Postdocs on June 19-21, 2016. 27 postdocs from 13 Universities throughout the Committee on Institutional Cooperation network participated in the workshop which was held in the Big Ten Conference Center in Rosemont, IL.

The Biomedical Learning and Student Training program at the University of Alaska takes a One Health approach to engage students from rural Alaska, one of the most remote areas in North America. Subsistence lifestyles are especially common and greatly impact the well-being of communities and individuals. The One Health concept resonates with rural Alaskans as it advocates that humans, animals, and the environment share one health because their interactions are extensive and they have all-encompassing impacts on one another.
