Morgan State University’s ASCEND Scholars Engage with Baltimore City Students in the UMB CURE Program

Thirteen ASCEND Scholars engaged with 27 Baltimore City youth involved in the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) Scholars Program. UMB CURE is a community-outreach effort to strengthen the pipeline that leads Baltimore City’s youth to health care and health research careers.

The youth, who are students from three middle schools (Franklin Square, Southwest Baltimore Charter School, and Green Street Academy), visited Morgan State’s campus on December 3, 2016. ASCEND Scholars engaged with the youth in several activities, including creating slime (colored plasma) in a chemistry laboratory, building marshmallow and spaghetti twine houses, and playing ice-breaker games.

Over the next two years, ASCEND will continue to work with community partners through various health-related and STEM collaborations.
