Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, M.D., affectionately known as Dr. Q, currently serves as the director of the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center Brain Tumor Surgery Program, as well as Associate Professor of Neurosurgery, and was recently appointed to the position of Chair of Neurologic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic.
After coming to California as a young laborer from Mexicali, Mexico in the late 1980s, Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa enrolled in community college, and subsequently graduated from University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in psychology. In 1999, Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa graduated from Harvard Medical School cum laude, going on to conduct post-doctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco.
Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa's research interests focus around the relationship between stem cells and brain tumors, neuro-oncology surgical outcomes and patient safety, amongst others. His personal story is not only impressive and inspirational but also humbling.
