Coaches-in-Training Sought for Five NRMN Grantwriting Coaching Groups Nationwide

One of NRMN's goals is developing a national network of trained coaches committed to providing postdoctoral and junior faculty researchers with hands-on guidance and feedback on proposal writing and relevant areas of professional development across research careers in the biomedical sciences.

In order to achieve this goal, four unique coaching models have been developed by faculty at participating institutions. NRMN is currently seeking new participants to train as coaches of the programs, through participation and real-time practices.

Requests for applications for coaches-in-training have recently been announced for a total of five upcoming cohorts of these coaching models (one cohort for each of the four models plus a second cohort for one of the models).

It is NRMN's expectation that experienced researchers who complete the coach training for a particular program will subsequently deliver that program through NRMN to a future cohort of postdoc and junior faculty mentees who would otherwise not have access to a professional development opportunity of this type at their home institutions.

The NRMN Steps Towards Academic Research (NRMN STAR) Fellowship Program combines on-site grantwriting and professional development experiences with distance learning techniques including online digital meetings to support early stage faculty career success.

Grantwriting Uncovered: Maximizing Strategies, Help, Opportunities, Experiences (GUMSHOE) links mentors with early career faculty mentees who wish to prepare an application to National Institutes of Health to conduct biomedical research. GUMSHOE's model is based on innovation, best practices, and brings together cohorts of junior faculty working with specific underserved and underrepresented populations.

The NRMN Proposal Preparation Program (NRMN-P3) begins with a 3-day workshop of NIH peer review processes and development of trainees' specific aims pages, followed by 6 online sessions for group review of trainees' proposals in progress, and a 1-day wrap up including a practice study section of trainees' advanced drafts by senior researchers.
