On May 11, 2019 at Xavier University’s 92nd commencement ceremony, BUILD Mentor Florastina Payton-Stewart, Ph.D., received the Norman C. Francis (NCF) Service Award. The NCF Service Award is awarded to a distinguished faculty member who has exhibited several or all of the following qualifications:
Payton-Stewart has exhibited several of the above qualifications, including serving on several University and departmental committees; working with the community and school board; and serving or holding national membership in a host of boards and committees such as the Education Committee of Saint Katharine Drexel Preparatory High School, the National Institute of Health Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) Working Group on Diversity (WGD); Keystone Symposia; Society of STEM Women of Color and more. In addition, Payton-Stewart has mentored over 20 research students and nearly 25 junior faculty members.
Payton-Stewart also serves as PI and co-PI to federally funded grants used to support student participation in STEM research programs and increase the number of K-12 STEM teachers. Her service extends beyond the walls of Xavier University, and she is very dedicated to serving her community. She believes in the mission of her mentor, Calvin Mackie, Ph.D., founder of the nonprofit organization, STEM NOLA.Payton-Stewart has worked with Mackie to bring STEM education and activities to inner city kids in the New Orleans area. She is focused on engaging, inspiring and exposing students to new and innovative ways of learning.
Payton-Stewart has dedicated her time and efforts to serving faculty, staff, students, the New Orleans community and STEM Higher Education.
