Members of the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) came together for the final Key Personnel Meeting of NRMN Phase I, from Jan. 28-30 at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The goals of the meeting (KPM) were to: (1) document outcomes and lessons learned, (2) strategize sustainability mechanisms for interventions that have proven effective, and (3) compile unanswered hypotheses that have arisen in NRMN’s mission to diversify the biomedical workforce.
In attendance were faculty and staff from each of NRMN’s five cores, NRMN External Advisors from the National Institutes of Health, and members of the Coordination and Evaluation Center (CEC). In addition to presentations from NRMN teams, the CEC shared descriptive data from the annual NRMN participant survey, and led a discussion of how to increase response rates in the future.
The KPM was an opportunity to discuss preliminary findings and overarching themes of NRMN during Phase I. During a presentation, the Mentor Training Core worked with NRMN-CAN (CIC Academic Network) to share their work on evidence-based approaches to mentoring. The Mentorship and Networking Core showed their experiences developing NRMNet, NRMN’s online networking platform, and a presentation from the Research Resources and Outreach Core in collaboration with American Association of Medical Professionals (AAMP), discussed Early Stage Investigators pursuing NIH funding. Each of the sessions looked at what has been accomplished, what was learned, what should be done next, and highlighted cross-core collaborations.
NRMN is partnered with the University of Puerto Rico, and previously held a Southeast Training Hub program there, in addition to other trainings. Past program participants briefly joined the event to share their NRMN experiences and the impact it has made on their scientific careers.
