Antwi Akom, PhD

Join us in congratulating Dr. Akom! Effective fall 2017 Antwi Akom, PhD, will be promoted to Professor of Africana Studies, and will become affiliate faculty in the Health Equity Institute at San Francisco State University (SF State), while retaining his affiliate faculty status in the Center for Vulnerable Populations at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). In addition to Dr. Akom's dual appointment at SF State and UCSF, he will be working with SF BUILD program's principal investigator, Dr. Leticia Márquez-Magaña, in an exciting new grant funded by the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities. Understanding How Bees Learn

First Graduating Cohort of BUILD PODER Scholars at CSUN Ready to Embark on Promising Graduate Careers

BUILD PODER at California State University, Northridge celebrated its first graduating cohort of nine seniors this May. Calvin Apodaca, Roxxette Zepeda, Ashley Ward, Adriana Mendez, Richard Gonsalez, Jose Estrada, Julie Hong, Garry Leonard and Umu Rogers reflect on their experiences as BUILD PODER Scholars, and share how the program has made a lasting impact on their lives.

NRMN Key Personnel Meeting (KPM) in Madison, Wisconsin

NRMN, CEC and NIH personnel gathered in Madison, Wisconsin for the NRMN semi-annual Key Personnel Meeting, June 14-16, 2017. Attending in person were 41 key personnel with 20 attending virtually including NRMN NIH Project Scientist Darren Sledjeski and Program Officer Mercedes Rubio.

First Cohort of Morgan State ASCEND Scholars Celebrates Successfully Completing Program

The first cohort of ASCEND Scholars successfully completed their two-year program and were celebrated by their peers, family, and Morgan State University staff and faculty on Thursday evening, May 11, 2017. The six teams of Scholars showcased the findings from the research projects they initiated during the 2015 Summer Research Institute (SRI). Six Scholars graduated from Morgan State in May and shared their post-graduation plans.

UTEP BUILDing SCHOLARS 2017 Summer in Review

It has been a busy summer at the BUILDing SCHOLARS Center and at the University. We’ve welcomed new students, wished our graduates good luck, and said “see you in August” to our fellows who traveled to other institutions. The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) also ranked No. 1 in the Brookings Institution Study of U.S. Public Universities out of 342 public universities for “performing well in both research and social mobility.”

First Round of BUILD EXITO Pilot Projects just Wrapped up!

BUILD EXITO just wrapped up the academic year by celebrating the work our first round of Pilot Projects recipients.  The ten researchers awarded this funding went through a competitive process and were awarded up to 50K to work on a new research project over the past year.
