Madison, Wisconsin is a beautiful place in the summer and a great place for NRMN to hold its semi-annual Key Personnel Meeting (KPM). Prof. Steven Wallace and Dr. Lourdes Guerrero, two CEC faculty members from UCLA, joined about 40 other NRMN personnel at their June 14-16 meeting. An additional 20 members of the NRMN family (including two more CEC members) joined by phone.

Five CEC senior faculty presented at the NIGMS Training, Workforce Development, & Diversity 2017 Program Directors' Meeting (TWD 2017) on June 18-21, 2017. BUILD and NRMN were well represented at the TWD 2017 meeting. A careful participant-observation study concluded that all attendees had a good time.

ReBUILDetroit funded five pilot, collaborative and course development projects submitted by investigators across partner institutions as part of a competitive granting process this month. Pilot awards totaled nearly $125,000, and are part of the five-year, $21MM ReBUILDetroit grant funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Thirteen ASCEND Scholars engaged with 27 Baltimore City youth involved in the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) Scholars Program. UMB CURE is a community-outreach effort to strengthen the pipeline that leads Baltimore City’s youth to health care and health research careers.

The Wayne State University Graduate School is proud to announce that Dean Ambika Mathur, Ph.D., is the 2017 recipient of the Wayne Women LEAD Woman of Distinction Award. Dean Mathur was honored in a public awards reception on Thursday, April 20, 2017. This event was hosted by the Wayne State University President’s Commission on the Status of Women (COSW) and Wayne Women LEAD, and also honored students and an alumna who have made significant contributions to women.

A study, which was conducted by UCLA researcher and reported in the journal Child Development, demonstrates the importance of diversity to middle school students.
